Antequera lies inland, north of Málaga, on a wide plain close to the geographic centre of Andalusia. It is not a coastal town in any sense. It is on this list because it is well connected and some people prefer it to the coast.

What it is like

Antequera is a historic Spanish town with churches, a hilltop fortress and very few foreign residents compared with the coast. Its prehistoric dolmens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the limestone landscape of El Torcal is a short drive away. Daily life is in Spanish.

The climate is inland too: hot summers and cold winters.

Getting around

  • Train. Antequera-Santa Ana is a high-speed station on the line between Málaga and Madrid. It is out in the countryside, a drive from the town. There is also a station in the town itself, so check which one your train uses.
  • Road. Motorways lead to Málaga, Seville, Granada and Córdoba, which is why the town is called the crossroads of Andalusia. Málaga is less than an hour away by car.
  • For daily life outside the centre you need a car.

Who it suits

Remote workers who want a Spanish town away from the coastal bustle and quick links to Málaga and Madrid.

Keep in mind

There are no gaming offices here that we know of and no beach. Marbella is a long drive. If you are still deciding, our guide to moving to the Costa Del Sol may help.
