Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and a long-established online gambling hub. Many who work there live in Spain, in La Línea or along the coast.
Areas
The coast is long and every town feels different. There is one page per town, from Gibraltar in the west to Nerja in the east, plus Ronda and Antequera further inland. Each is a short, honest guide.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and a long-established online gambling hub. Many who work there live in Spain, in La Línea or along the coast.
Sotogrande is a quiet residential estate in San Roque, Cádiz province, known for polo, golf and an international school. Gibraltar is a short drive away.
Manilva is the last municipality on the Málaga coast before Cádiz province: a hill village, the beach town of Sabinillas and the marina of La Duquesa.
Estepona is the big town of the western Costa Del Sol: a flower-filled old town, a long beach and a calmer pace. Also covers Cancelada.
San Pedro de Alcántara is part of Marbella but feels like its own town. Next door, Nueva Andalucía is the residential golf valley behind Puerto Banús.
Puerto Banús is the marina west of Marbella: large yachts, designer shops, restaurants and nightlife. Lively all year, crowded and noisy in summer.
Marbella from the old town and the Golden Mile to Elviria and, just over the boundary, Calahonda. The classic base for gaming offices. No train.
La Cala de Mijas is a former fishing village between Marbella and Fuengirola with a strong community. Also covers Riviera del Sol and El Faro.
Mijas Pueblo is the white village on the mountainside above Fuengirola: steep streets, wide views over the coast and a quiet life once the day trippers go.
Fuengirola is a compact, flat town on the C-1 train to Málaga, with a big Nordic community. Also covers Los Pacos, Carvajal and Las Lagunas.
Benalmádena is three places in one: a white hill village, Arroyo de la Miel with the C-1 train station, and the coast with its marina, Puerto Marina.
Torremolinos is the coastal town closest to Málaga airport and the city, on the C-1 train line, with long sandy beaches and a pedestrian centre.
Alhaurín el Grande is an inland town behind the Sierra de Mijas: a working Spanish town with country houses around it, no train and no beach.
Málaga city is where most new gaming and tech offices have opened. A guide to its areas, from the Centro and Soho to El Palo, Teatinos and Huelin.
Rincón de la Victoria sits just east of Málaga city: a Spanish family town with a long seafront promenade, no train and a short drive into Málaga.
Torre del Mar is the seaside town of Vélez-Málaga, east of Málaga: flat, with a wide beach, a long promenade and a year-round Spanish town life.
Nerja is the last town at the eastern end of the Málaga coast: cliffs, coves, the Balcón de Europa and mountains behind. Beautiful, and far from offices.
Ronda is a mountain town inland from the coast, built on both sides of a deep gorge. It has a rail station, cold winters and a slower pace of life.
Antequera is an inland town in the middle of Andalusia, north of Málaga, with a high-speed rail station, motorways in every direction and old monuments.
They live all along the coast, from Gibraltar to Nerja. People with an office job in Málaga often look at Málaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. People who work in Marbella look at Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, La Cala de Mijas and Estepona.
The C-1 Cercanías line links Málaga city centre, the airport, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. The line ends at Fuengirola, so there is no train to Marbella or Estepona.
People who work in Gibraltar often look at Estepona, Manilva, Sotogrande and La Línea, the Spanish town at the border. Read the Gibraltar page for the border and what to check first.
