La Cala de Mijas is the heart of Mijas Costa, the seaside strip of the large municipality of Mijas. It lies between Marbella and Fuengirola. The white village in the hills has its own page: Mijas Pueblo.

What it is like

La Cala is a former fishing village that has kept its village feel: a small centre, a tower on the beach, a weekly market and a wooden boardwalk, the Senda Litoral, that follows the shore towards Marbella.

It is an up-and-coming area. The village itself is very small, and most people live tucked away in the valleys and hills around it. There is a good mix of Spanish families and international residents.

It is where co-founder Catie spends her free time, so expect to see the Circle here.

Neighbourhoods

  • La Cala village. The centre and the streets behind the beach. You can do daily life on foot here, which is rare in Mijas Costa.
  • La Cala Golf and the hills. Houses and apartments around golf courses inland. Quiet and green, and a drive from everything.
  • Riviera del Sol. A large hillside residential area west of La Cala, towards Calahonda and Marbella. Many homes have sea views; the streets are steep, so most people drive even to the beach.
  • El Faro. A residential area east of La Cala around the Calaburras lighthouse, which gives it its name. Mostly houses on a slope above a rocky stretch of coast, and the part of Mijas Costa closest to Fuengirola and its train station.

For work

There are no gaming offices in La Cala that we know of. People who live here work from home or drive to Marbella or Málaga. The company directory shows who is where.

Getting around

  • No train. Buses run along the coast road, but most residents drive.
  • Fuengirola and its train station are a short drive east. Marbella is a short drive west.
  • There is building everywhere, so traffic in high season is becoming almost as heavy as in Puerto Banús. One thing locals like about La Cala is the back roads, which get you where you need to be without going on the A-7.

Who it suits

People who want a quieter, community feel between Marbella and Fuengirola, and who work from home or do not mind a drive to the office.

Keep in mind

The village is busy in summer and parking near the beach gets tight. In Riviera del Sol, El Faro and the hills, plan on driving for everything.
